DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT AND COMMUNICATIONS


Position: Director of Development and Communications

Reports to: Executive Director

Compensation: $100,000-$110,000, commensurate with experience. Full-time, exempt position (possibility of remote or reduced/flexible work schedules). Position Description:

DSCS is seeking a Director of Development and Communication who will lead the effort to identify and secure sources of funding for Dolores Street Community Services, to secure and grow our organizational budget of over $14 million. They will partner with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors on the creation and implementation of a comprehensive multi-channel annual fundraising plan to diversify funding across individual/major giving, private foundation grants, corporate partners, and government funding, and will manage a development associate consultant, a communications interns, volunteers, and other consultants, as needed. In addition, the Director will develop and implement a 40th anniversary fundraising campaign in 2022.


The Director will also oversee strategic organizational communications strategies, plan activities and build external relationships with the organization's constituencies, including funders and the media. Lastly, the Director of Development and Communications will have extensive experience in marketing and branding and will lead an agency re-branding project.


Position Responsibilities

Development:

  • Create and execute the agency's annual fundraising plan, in collaboration with the agency's Executive Director and Board of Directors.
  • Secure financial support from individual/major givers, government agencies, foundations, and corporations.
  • Manage the implementation of a new data management platform, Raiser's, Edge and oversee staff responsible for data entry and gift processing.
  • Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with major donors.
  • Coordinate and support fundraising efforts of the Board of Directors and its Fundraising Committee or other effective revenue-generating strategies or bodies, such as an auxiliary fundraising council.
  • Supervise the work of a grant associate consultant; develop a job description for, recruit, and train a communications intern; manage volunteers, as necessary.
  • Create and execute a strategy for a large, sustained base of annual individual and major donors.
  • Oversee grant seeking including researching foundations, proposal writing, and reporting requirements; research new funding opportunities for grants and major donors in key program areas.
  • Track proposals and reports for all government, foundation, and corporate fundraising.
  • Oversee and project manage online and in-person giving and fundraising events.

Communications:

  • Implement a year-round communications and social marketing plan to keep partners and supporters informed and engaged with relevant agency programming news and events.
  • Prepare and manage strategic communications material to funders and other key stakeholders, including an agency annual impact report.
  • Advise in the creation of digital, video, audio and print content.

Contract Management:

  • Monitor contractual performance of grant deliverables to ensure compliance with terms and to identify conflicts or changes requiring resolution at contract renewal.
  • Coordinate, review, and approve for submission critical funder reports.
  • Supporting annual City contract renewals and evaluating new Requests for Proposals (RFP's) for fit and alignment with agency work areas, strategies, and priorities.
  • Maintain deadlines on deliverables and communicate on an ongoing basis with funding partners about contractual issues.

Other Organizational Duties:

  • Participate on the agency's Strategic Leadership Team and other agency committees, as needed.
  • Conduct business in accordance with the DSCS Employee Handbook, exercising sound judgment and serving the best interests of the agency and the community.
  • Work within the framework of the agency's mission, vision, values, theory of change, and organization's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, restorative justice, trauma-informed work, and language justice.
  • Commit yourself to treating each community member with respect and dignity.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Background in and passion for working with low-income and immigrant communities around issues of affordable housing, land use, and/or immigrant & worker rights; familiarity with these issues in the Mission District and San Francisco, highly desired. Ability to inspire others with respect to the agency's mission, vision, & values, commitment to equity and social justice, and intersectional work, required.
  • 5-7 years of nonprofit fundraising experience with a focus on foundation grants, other institutional donors (government or corporate), and major donors for agencies with organizational budgets greater than $5,000,000, or comparable related experience in growing and diversifying revenue sources; experience managing fundraising teams, preferred.
  • Extensive experience in marketing & communications; nonprofit experience, strongly preferred.
  • Experience successfully cultivating and soliciting an individual giving program of $1,000+ donors, and major gifts of $2,000+, as well as capital campaigns.
  • Experience developing a fundraising department, highly desired.
  • Experience writing and overseeing the process for successful government and private grant proposals and renewals; experience researching and applying for federal and state funding, preferred.
  • Experience with Raiser's Edge strongly preferred.
  • Experience supervising and growing development staff, a plus; experience recruiting and engaging volunteers, preferred.
  • Adept at identifying traditional and "out of the box" funding opportunities to meet aggressive growth goals.
  • Must be self-directed/-motivated and have extensive experience with project management.
  • Passion and capable of inspiring others
  • Effective interpersonal, public speaking, facilitation, presentation, and grant writing skills.
  • Highly collaborative both with internal teams as well as external partners and contractors.
  • Bilingual in spoken and written Spanish, preferred.
  • COVID vaccination required.
