Organization's Mission: Dolores Street Community Services (DSCS) works to prevent homelessness, create affordable housing, build community, and empower low-income residents of San Francisco. The Dolores Shelter Program provides emergency shelter for up to 85 homeless men every night, at two locations in the Mission District.


Job Summary: The Maintenance Technician is responsible for ongoing maintenance and repairs as well as implementation of preventive maintenance plans across the agency.


Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform basic maintenance duties and repairs which may include:

  • Plumbing: unclog sinks, showers, and toilets, install or repair faucets, handles, etc.
  • Electrical: Repair/replace broken switches/plugs, light fixtures, ceiling fans
  • Painting/Staining: interior and exterior including prep; touch-up and spot painting
  • Drywall repair and general patching
  • Carpentry: repair/replace damaged wood trim, keep windows and doors operable
  • Glazing: replace broken window/door glass
  • Cleaning & Maintenance: Pressure wash sidewalks, restrooms; disposal of bulky waste items; assist janitorial staff with larger projects and fill-in for short-term absences
  • General: Install and/or assemble fixtures and furniture; move furniture; other facilities arrangements
  • Driving: pickup/deliver meals to hotel clients and shelters; assist with purchasing and errands as required.
  • Inventory: Keep track of food and supplies inventory.

Other Duties

  • Follow all safety procedures
  • Fulfill work orders or oversee outside providers fulfilling work orders
  • Complete work reports as required
  • Fill out incident reports if witness to illegal or inappropriate behavior.
  • Turn-in receipts and other vital documents in a timely fashion
  • Attend organizational and departmental meetings, trainings and activities as required
  • Responds to emergencies on short notice
  • Maintain good boundaries with clients, staff and volunteers
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Two years experience with maintenance and repairs; preferably in a shelter, group housing or affordable housing environment.
  • Experience with preventive maintenance
  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • Data entry and e-mail communication
  • Able to work independently without assistance and with minimal supervision
  • A valid California Driver's License and good driving record
  • Physical requirements may include lifting and carry up to 50 lbs; Standing, crouching, bending, walking and other physically demanding movements and tasks
  • A valid phone number and e-mail address
  • Verbal and written fluency in either English or Spanish
  • COVID-19 Vaccination

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certifications or trainings related to maintenance and repair work
  • Bilingual in verbal and written English and Spanish is strongly preferred but not required
  • Experience with Excel and Word
